The Polysomnography I & II - 14 Day Introductory Course is a comprehensive 14-day course, covering 9 areas of instruction, encompassing over 100 hours of intensive training in polysomnography. The course includes 55 hours of didactic instruction, 41.5 hours of practical/interaction instruction, a mid-point examination with feedback and a final examination. This course includes:

1) Introduction to Polysomnography:
• Introduction to sleep disorders
• Anatomy and Physiology
• Neurophysiology
• Somnopharmacology
• Privacy
• Patient Safety and Fall Precautions
• Infection control

2) Applied Electronics and Instrumentation:
• Introduction to AC and DC amplifiers
• Instrumentation
• Ancillary Equipment
• Instrument calibration

3) Equipment/Patient Preparation & Patient Monitoring:
• The 10-20 System of Electrode Placement
• PSG montages
• Protocols for monitoring, documentation and patient interaction
• Patient assessment
• Pediatric and adult polysomnography
• PSG Recording Protocols

4) Sleep Stage and Arousal Scoring and Artifact Recognition:
• The new AASM scoring rules
• Rechtschaffen and Kales scoring rules
• Seizure recognition
• Adult and pediatric sleep

5) Cardiopulmonary Monitoring & Scoring:
• Recognizing and Scoring Respiratory Events
• Recognizing and Scoring Cardiac Events
• Responding to Cardiac and Respiratory Events

6) Therapeutic Interventions:
• PAP titration (CPAP, Bilevel and AutoPAP)
• Non-invasive ventilation
• Oxygen titration

7) Movement Disorders, disorders of arousal and seizure recognition:
• Perioidic limb movement disorder
• Restless legs syndrome
